The Table Is Set

Sometimes I like to get in the kitchen and flex my cooking skills… especially when the recipe calls for crab!  I’ve partnered with Soul Food Sessions to make Charred Corn Crabcakes with Watermelon Rind Slaw. Soul Food Sessions was started in 2017 with a goal to enhance opportunities for African-American chefs by hosting dining experiences that feature diverse culinary talents and open the conversation about equal opportunity in the food industry. Soul Food Sessions is taking their mission to increase diversity in the culinary industry on the road thanks to a partnership with Coca-Cola Consolidated.  SFS will host “The Table is Set: A Four-City Tour Served With A Coke.”  The pop-up dinner series is bringing their third stop on the tour to Baltimore on Sunday, July 29th at the American Brewery.

The  Charred Corn Crab Cakes with Watermelon Rind Slaw recipe will be served as one of the courses at the dinner. It was very easy to make and all ingredients can be purchased at your local Harris Teeter. I paired the meal with Coca-Cola Life.  Coca-Cola Life pairs with the subtle natural sweetness of watermelon rind to bring out the complex texture and flavors, yet lightness, of crab cakes.

Patio Party at Gertrude’s Restaurant

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know the Baltimore Museum of Art had a restaurant inside.  I’m ashamed to say I haven’t been to the BMA since middle school.  That changed recently when I was invited to Gertrude’s Restaurant for their new summer series Patio Party.

Gertrude’s Restaurant was packed for a Wednesday evening. A few steps from the museum entrance, I walked past the restaurant and straight onto the outdoor patio area.  A portion of the outdoor patio was covered with a tent, which was perfect because there was a bit of drizzle that day.  The outdoor space features a tranquil fountain and sculpture garden.

The cocktail menu included beer, wine and two specialty cocktails.  The food was a mix of Fried Oyster Sliders, Cocktail Shrimp, Crab Cake Bahn Mi, Fried Catfish Cakes and French Onion Dip with fried onions and potato chips.  Gertrude’s will continue to host their Patio Party series for every Wednesday in July – August 2018.  And they also had outdoor games like a big chess set, checker set and card games.  Fun time for a Wednesday night.
