EVENTS

#EatArt

DSCN0338

Every now and again I come across a unique event invite that catches my attention and #EatArt was one of those events.  The concept of this event was “Food meets Art” or “Art meets Food” … whichever way you prefer.  I assumed to expect food and art but I didn’t know any other details so of course I was intrigued.  The event was hosted by Culinary Socialite Chef Cat and The Incredible Creation.  Chef Cat is a chef at Dovecoat Café, one of my favorite places to get a bomb breakfast sandwich.

I pulled up to the Impact Hub in North Avenue’s famed Arts District and immediately found a space in front of the building on the street.  I think they also have a parking lot because people were walking from the side of the building into the front door. Looking inside a large window as I walked to the front door I saw paintings I from some of the evening’s featured artists.

Walking in I noticed the bar and headed straight for it – if you read this blog regularly, you know how I get down.  Guests were encouraged to try one of the bright yellow-colored complimentary drinks on the bar.  One of the bartenders told me it was a “Pineapple Cocktail Punch”.  There was also a full bar available for mixing other cocktails.

After I grabbed my drink and began to walk around a bit, I learned each artist was paired with a chef to collaborate on a painting and a signature dish.  There were six artists total and five chefs, one of the chefs didn’t show, but that was fine because the lone artists did well on his own.

First up was Chef Cat with the help of Sous Chef Robbie she created a dish with Spicy Italian Sausage, Quail Eggs, Kale, Plantain, and beet hummus.  I think they did a great job with the food interpretation they presented based on the artist’s work.

Next up was the lone ranger and his burger painting.  If you ask me his art didn’t need food accompaniment because I wanted to bite that burger right off the canvas.

DSCN0371

The Wisdom Cake Company baked miniature cupcakes and I sampled the maple cinnamon buttercream with chocolate cake.

DSCN0329

Chef Biscuit had a great presentation with her Lamb Ball with peach and mint yogurt, fried plantain and cinnamon sticks.  Her paired artist created and island inspired painting to compliment the dish.

As I made my way to the other room I noticed a larger crowd starting to form as they were making their way in and mingling with other guest.  The Impact Hub is an open and clean space to host a workshop or event. Artwork adorned the walls and there are two large rooms and several smaller more intimate meeting rooms.

In the other large room was a live band entertaining the crowd, vendors and more food and artists.

An inclusive food event wouldn’t be complete without a vegan option and Chef Ishan Bey nailed it with his Vegan Lamb Chop and Blue Mashed Potatoes.  He also made a Butterfly Pea Blue Tea.  His artists artwork was very eye catching, for obvious reasons.  I think he did a great job with the colors and the lines and capturing the food that Chef Bey prepared.

Chef Justin Holloman created a deconstructed Mexican Street Taco.  He was hard at work on the presentation, he gets and A+ for that.

GRAND OPENING: McHenry Row Ruby 8 Noodles and Sushi

If you weren’t already drooling from my earlier post and photos about Ruby 8 Noodles and Sushi in Horseshoe Casino, you definitely will be by the time you finish reading this post.  Ruby 8 Noodles and Sushi has a new location in McHenry Row, Baltimore and I was invited to the soft opening celebration.

Walking into the restaurant,  I was excited to see a DJ spinning tunes at the end of the bar. It was a great addition to the party and it relaxed the after-work crowd.

Ruby 8 Noodles and Sushi has a full bar available but the liquor was complimentary for the soft opening…sweeeet! There were three bartenders behind the bar and each created four signature drinks to choose from. My favorite was the Tsunami Jack and my friends seemed to like the Hot Chili.

And of course what sushi restaurant would be complete without a fresh sushi bar.

The restaurant has seating at the bar, there is a small lounge area with three large table and lounge seating and there is also the traditional restaurant booth seating.  As soon as we sat down the friendly and knowledgeable staff began to bring us various appetizer items.  Too many to name, so I’ll just post the photos below.  Please know that everything was delicious.

Baltimore Cocktail Week

BCW6

If you haven’t already heard, Baltimore is the next booming city for craft cocktails and cocktail enthusiasts.  Last week, the city hosted the 2nd Annual Baltimore Cocktail Week and this week we are hosting The Bar Institute educational conference.

BCW2

I was invited to attend two events during Baltimore Cocktail week and the energy at these events were electric! The mission of Baltimore Cocktail Week is to “focus on the cultivation and enhancement of the hospitality industry in Baltimore City and surrounding areas through innovative cocktail programs, comprehensive educational forums and consumer enrichment events.”  There were a total of six events held at different restaurants in the city. Eleven other restaurants also created signature drinks for Baltimore Cocktail Week and with each cocktail purchase a $1.00 donation was made to a charitable organization.

BCW

The first event I attended was the “Baltimore’s Lovely Ladies Bartending Competition” at Pen & Quill Restaurant presented by Tullamore DEW Whiskey.  Twelve female bartenders created one-of-a-kind cocktails and guests judged the creations and crowned a winner. Each guest was greeted with a welcome cocktail “The Drambuie Winner’s Cup” and given a score card and drink ticket at the door.  The score cards were numbered 1-12 to match with the twelve bartenders,  your card number identified your bartender and cocktail.  I was given a card with the number one (1) and I was able to sample a cocktail made by Molly McNaulty of the Cultured bar in Mt. Vernon Marketplace.

BCW4
Molly mixing her cocktail

Molly named her cocktail “Believe In Magic” and she said it was inspired by the Baltimore Orioles Opening Day. She wanted to make an orange and black cocktail and also a cocktail that anyone can enjoy in the morning.  For her cocktail she made the bottom layer with carrot juice, whiskey, tonic, lime and maple syrup and the top layer with Mezcal, balsamic and beet juice.  The ingredients may not sound like they mix well together, but don’t be fooled this cocktail was a hit! Sweet and slightly tangy after I drank it I immediately wanted another.

BCW3
“Believe In Magic” Cocktail

The second event I attended was a social media master class taught by Chelsea Gregoire of Drinkable Genius.  Chelsea is a bartender at Pen & Quill and she has 10 years of experience in the restaurant and bar industry.  I first met Chelsea when I went to an event with a friend she made the tastiest cocktail using Old Grand-Dad whiskey and mead.  Chelsea spent her Wednesday morning with 20+ attendees sharing her photography and social media tips and tricks of the trade.   Guests enjoyed delicious Bloody Mary cocktails and coffee.  Over the last few days, I’ve applied a few of her tips  and it has increased my social media engagement.  Thanks Chelsea!

I love these food and beverage events in Baltimore. If you know of any others send them my way.

Taste Of Pikesville 2016

TOP14

Last week, I had the honor of attending the 5th annual Taste of Pikesville event at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel.  This was my first time attending the event and I was pretty impressed.  For starters I didn’t know there was such a variety of restaurants in the Pikesville area.  We sampled cuisines such as Indian, Mexican, Uzbek, American, Peruvian, Italian, Island and Japanese.  There was also a raffle giving away gift cards for some of the Pikesville merchants.  In addition to the 40 + food vendors, there were also liquor vendors serving wine, margaritas, tequila and vodka.

My top three favorites from the event were…

TOP11
Shrimp Salad from North Oaks
Top15
Herb Cajun Salmon from Island Quizine
TOP19

I guess you can say I liked all the seafood options.  Each guest was given a blue plastic chip to place in the box at the table of their overall favorite.  My chip went to Island Quizine and they won! There were also 11 guest judges that voted on other categories and after all was said and done the winners were…

Beer, Bourbon & BBQ … Oh My!

bb33

On Saturday afternoon, I attended the Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Festival held at Timonium Fairgrounds and I must say… The three B’s was the Bees Knees!

I arrived at the fairgrounds around 2:00 pm on Saturday just in time for my general admission session.  Other guests visited on Friday night and the VIP ticket holders were invited to start the festivities at noon on Saturday.  I’m a newbie to the BBB Festival and the Timonium Fairgrounds, so I was pleased to discover the parking was free and the parking lots are fairly close to the main event area.

bb38

There was a long line of general admission patrons waiting to get into the event, but there were also plenty of staff directing the lines and this made the process run smoothly and the line moved fast.  Once inside guests grabbed their free tasting glass for unlimited beer and bourbon samples. There were three sections at the festival — the main entrance area, the Bourbon west wing and the Beer east wing.  I headed for the beer side first because I’m not a big beer drinker and I wanted to save the bourbon tasting for last.

bb37

bb8

The beer area was pretty busy with guests moving from booth to booth.  There were booths positioned along the walls and in the middle of the space.  Over 60 beers were available to sample with a variety of IPA’s, seasonal favorites, domestic, imported, local brands and ciders.

bb35

There was also beer “Tasting Theater” area featuring some of the fan favorites. Each class held 50 slots and were first come, first seat. There were four classes total and I attended the tasting for Jailbreak Brewing.   I know, I know, I said I’m not a beer drinker but I couldn’t help it because the art featured on the cans was pretty cool and with beer names like Big Punisher and VanDammit this made the tasting experience even more interesting.

Jailbreak2

Jailbreak

Of course the Big Punisher beer is named after the late New York rapper.  Jailbreak founders thought he was so interesting they wanted to name a beer after him. The Big Punisher has a high alcohol content of 9% that will definitely punish you. And it has big tropical flavors such as mango, apricot, and motueka from New Zealand. The Van Dammit is named after Belgium Action Superstar, Jean-Claude Van Damm.  It’s a strong beer and their most expensive to make, so expensive they only make it twice per year.

In addition to the beer vendors there were also craft and food vendors selling specialty items and brands.

Moving over to the Bourbon side of the event, that seemed to be the recreational area.  There was a cigar smoking lounge, a live band and a game area.

The festival featured over 40 bourbons and other liquors. I headed straight for the premium bourbon booth and wouldn’t you know I’m third in line when they ran out of the top-shelf brands. *sad face* …maybe I should have come over to this side first.

bb40
The bourbon lady showing us the last drop in the bottle.

Not to fear, they still had plenty of the other brands available to taste.  I sampled Four Roses, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Knob Creek, Fire Fly and many more. I must say I was impressed with the pouring size because they were NOT stingy with the liquor.

On to the barbecue…there were about 15 food vendors at the event, but honestly I was so busy with the beer tastings and bourbon samplings that I didn’t have time to carefully consider my food options.

I had a blast at the Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Festival!  Next year I’ll be sure to plan it out more carefully so I can sample the famous BBQ. #BeerBourbonBBQ
